The Power of the Mind

How often do you find that you are ruminating over events within your mind? These events may have occurred or may not have taken place. Depending on the viewer, such instances can be considered fantasizing or the active use of your imagination. The two do serve a purpose, but lets divulge deeper into why they are available to humanity.

According to the Merriam-Webster, the definition of fantasy is the faculty or activity of imagining things, especially things that are impossible or improbable.

Going back to my initial question, do you find that you will frequently role-playing through certain events in your life. When doing so, do you imagine yourself as a superhero? In the movie, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Walter will frequently daydream about very detailed and extravagant adventures. In these instances, he views himself as the hero of his story. However, the way he views himself in his daydreams are not congruent with his current life. When he would bind to his daydreams it left little room for him to actually live out his life. He in a way stunted his ability to become the hero of his own story, because he was living out his life from another plane of existence. How often do you catch yourself doing this?

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of an imagination is the ability of the mind to be creative or resourceful. It also can be defined as the faculty or action of forming new ideas, or images or concepts of external objects not present to the senses.

I recently was in a Clubhouse room where an individual was stating every single person has the gift of imagination. To say that I am not creative is literally going against who you are as a person. The reason why we differ from all other species is primarily due to our level of cognition, physical attributes, and our power of IMAGINATION. We are creators in the making! If we can think about it, then we can essentially can create it wiht the proper resources. This is one of the primary points that Rudolf Steiner was making when he indicated we must educate to the faculties of the whole child. To not only nurture the physical development of the child, but also the inner being.

Is it My Imagination or a Fantasy?

To take it a little further, the lines between fantasy and imagination can also appear to blend. This is primarily due to people's beleif systems. I can remember when I was a child, I frequently had this feeling that I had a close connection to Archangel Michael. I would imagine myself working alongside with the him and his legion of warriors. To some, what I just shared may be considered a fantasy. Individuals may not believe that Archangels exist; however, to others they may choose to differ.

Point being is that the active use of our imagination is working with ideas that can impact the physical realm. It also inspires us to move, create, and explorer. When employing a fantasy, it does serve to invigorate the mental faculties. However, it does not essentially get us to proactively progress in life. In more cases than not, it can become a distraction for what we are truly meant to be doing at this time.

How to Develop My Imagination?

“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel" -The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. If you do a search on the meaning of this quote you will find that there are some in depth conversations that are taking place. Essentially, my takeaway is that yes, there are challenges in this world. Yes, we may fear what lays behind those challenges, but don't let your fears overrun your life. If we do not take the risk or the opportunity to explorer, then we may very well cut our chance of actually being able to feel the rewards of overcoming a specific challenge.
